And in this article, we’re sharing some of the best models that will provide you with the kind of durability, affordability, and security you’re looking for.
Low security: Internal doors, internal offices, and storage rooms
Low security locks can be ideal for internal doors in your home, such as bathrooms or a master bedroom. Or, they can be fitting in some commercial settings for internal offices in a company building or storage rooms with office supplies. Some low security options from Kwikset include:Â
- Burbank Push Button Lever – Bed/Bath. The Burbank Lever is a Grade 3 model perfect for the areas of your home that could use a little bit of extra privacy, such as a bathroom or bedroom.
- Kingston Lever – Light Commercial – Hall/Closet. This is a non-locking Grade 2 fire-rated lever appropriate for low to medium security commercial spaces, such as hallways or closets.
Medium security: Residential entries and private offices
Medium security locks can feature levers, knobs, and deadbolts with an added level of security compared to the models featured in the previous section. Typically, they’ve been rated for higher traffic areas and stand up well under attempted tampering. Take a look at some of the options popular for residential front doors, private offices, and more:
- 780 Deadbolt – Keyed One Side – featuring SmartKey Security. Deadbolts will give you an extra level of security beyond a lever or doorknob, and this Grade 2 model by Kwikset is ideal for external doors or stand-alone storage sheds or garages.
- Halo Select Touchscreen Wi-Fi and Matter Enabled Smart Lock. Smart locks, such as the Halo Select from Kwikset, is a good option for entry doors, private entrances for accessory dwelling units on your property, or private offices. This model features a touchscreen as well as remote access and keyed access for more versatility. And it offers the security and durability of a BHMA Grade AAA deadbolt.
High security: Commercial entries, high value storage
High security locks must stand up under a high level of potential stress, either from high usage, fire exposure, or break-in attempts. These types of locks come with a Grade 1 or AAA rating, such as these common Kwikset models:
- 980 Series Grade 1 Deadbolt Featuring SmartKey Security. The 980 Series deadbolt is similar to the 780 Series in design, but comes with an ANSI Grade 1 rating, making it better suited for high security locations.Â
- Halo Touch Traditional Fingerprint Smart Lock. If you’re looking for a high security lock with a biometric function, the Halo Touch is the Kwikset lock for you. The hardware has a BHMA AAA rating, and the smart technology is compatible with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. In addition to fingerprint scanning for up to 50 unique users, the Halo can also be controlled remotely through the Kwikset app. It’s a good option for second homes and commercial spaces looking to go keyless, while maintaining a higher level of security.
Other considerations for choosing your Kwikset lock
Still wondering how to choose the right Kwikset lock for your setting? Here are a few additional considerations when making your decision:
- Lock grade. Most of the locks made by Kwikset are rated on the ANSI scale, from 1 to 3. Grade 1 is the highest level of security and has been tested for more cycles as well as functionality under environmental stress, such as fire or weather exposure. You may also see ratings for Kwikset locks by BHMI, which are graded alphabetically, with AAA being the highest standard for security and functionality.
- Smart versus mechanical. Whether to opt for smart locks or traditional mechanical locks is a big consideration for home owners and business owners. On the one hand, smart locks offer a wider range of functionality options, such as remote opening and data tracking. But, mechanical options are preferable for property owners who want a simple, reliable option.  Â
- Keyed versus keyless. Another way to think about your Kwikset lock options is to choose between keyed or keyless. Keyed options include most standard mechanical levers, doorknobs and deadbolts, while keyless options can come in both mechanical and smart technology models. Keyless options can be a good solution for commercial settings in which multiple employees need security access, as well as in multi-family homes or short-term rentals. Â
- The style and composition of your door. When recommending a Kwikset lock for your setting, we’ll look at models that are best suited for your door. For example, a front door with an inset window should have a double-keyed deadbolt so that anyone trying to force entry can’t access the deadbolt by breaking the window. Similarly, we wouldn’t recommend a high security lock on a door which is lightweight and easily forced open. If you’re not sure how to match the right Kwikset lock to your current doors, ask our team at Reliable Locksmith for recommendations!
- Fire ratings and building code compliance. In commercial settings, or certain doors within residential apartment buildings, code compliance is an important factor in choosing the right lock. You’ll need to verify what is required for your locks in terms of fire-rating, delayed egress, electric strike compatibility, and more.
